Macrina Bakery founder, Leslie Mackie, got a tip from a friend in 2011 about a gambreled roof barn on a 6-acre parcel of land located on Vashon - just a short ferry ride from Seattle. The land was covered with thick woods and hazel nut orchards.

The barn had been neglected but, its bones remained solid so we embarked on a collaborative process to rehabilitate the original structure and expand its footprint, while staying true to its roots.

We preserved and extended the original gambrel roof and tactfully added shed dormers along its length. The dormers enabled us to sneak a new stair and ensuite bathrooms into the upstairs layout, while preserving the lines of the gambrel ceiling in the newly configured bedrooms. Downstairs, the command center kitchen is flanked by a dining space which overlooks the gardens and a living room which sits beneath the original barn ceiling. The result is a home specially designed for Mackie, her daughter and two dogs, that gives her the space to do the things she loves: cook, entertain and hang out with family.

“MACKIE IS AN EAR-TO-EAR smile working from her command center of a kitchen in what was once, and still is, a gambreled-roof barn on six acres of forest/hazelnut orchard."

Rebecca Teagarden, The Seattle Times

I tried to do this as reasonably as possible. They presented ideas I never would have thought of; they have so many things in their heads. I felt lucky to work with people who asked me the right questions so I could answer them. I felt luck to work with people who asked me the right questions so I could answer them.
