Sometimes the process of remodeling is iterative. That was the case for our West Mercer clients, who undertook a small remodel (the master bath!), which sparked interest in a larger rework. That was where we came in.
With the master bath complete and not to change, we turned our attention to the rest of the home.
Built in the 1970s, the home had low ceilings, small rooms, a narrow entry hall and a funky footprint. We restructured the main level to create a lighter and airier space. We replaced walls with pairs of light steel pipe columns. We consolidated much needed storage functionality into multifunctional full height custom fir cabinetry. We removed walls that closed the living room off from the entry (and every other room on the first floor) and replaced the home’s narrow stair with a highly detailed wood and steel one. We capitalized on the extra height afforded by the already sunken living room and paired it with a new double height space over the main stair.
In the family, dining and kitchen area, we added 160 square feet (and removed more walls) to make the space more free flowing and suitable for a modern family that enjoys hanging out and playing music together.
Upstairs we added two new long shed dormers to both sides of the roof providing much needed extra space and head height in the bedrooms. We also added a new covered porch to protect the entry from rain and create a sitting space facing the front yard.
A gut overhaul inside and out - well except for that one bathroom.

Before & After
A new modern Dutch Gable roof slopes down to create a covered entry porch and replaced the home’s original clipped gable with recessed entry. We conjoined the homes two small original dormers into a new elongated shed dormer creating more room for the upstairs bedrooms and a two-story stairwell. New metal clad windows, a warm VG fir entry door and horizontal stained cedar siding update the exterior.
